Neighbor Island Jails Project

Aerial images of Kauai Maui and Hilo Community Correctional Centers
The Hawaii Department of Public Safety (PSD) provides correctional and law enforcement services to Hawaii’s communities with professionalism, integrity and fairness. PSD is proposing to alleviate the persistent and significant overcrowded conditions at the Kauai, Maui and Hawaii jails by developing a new inmate housing unit at each of the Kauai, Maui and Hawaii jails. The new inmate housing units will provide additional beds to address the overcrowded conditions; provision of such housing is not intended to increase the inmate population at the Kauai, Maui and Hawaii jails beyond their current numbers. Instead, inmates housed in cramped conditions and in spaces not well suited for inmates, would be accommodated in housing units designed and constructed to State and National standards. The proposed housing units would help achieve safe, secure, and humane environments for the care and custody of adult male and female offenders originating from Kauai, Maui and Hawaii counties.
